What are AI credits really worth?

A plain-English guide to Claude plans, API prices and when each one makes sense. Every number links to a public source, and every figure carries its date.

The short version

Three things to know before you read on.

  1. 1

A plan is a flat fee for a meter.

You pay a fixed amount each month and get a share of a usage meter. The API charges for every token you use.

  2. 2

    The biggest numbers are ceilings.

Run to the limit, a $200 Claude plan could hold about $8,000 of API usage in a month. Most people use far less.

  3. 3

    Your own daily spend decides.

Divide the plan price by 30. Spend more than that a day through the API and the plan is probably cheaper.

Words used here

Five terms, in plain words.

Token
A small chunk of text, about three-quarters of a word. Models read and write in tokens.
API
A way for software to use a model directly. You are billed per token.
Plan
A monthly subscription for the Claude apps and Claude Code, with a usage meter.
Cache
Reusing text you already sent. Reading it again costs a fraction of the first time.
Break-even
The daily spend where a flat plan costs the same as paying per token.

The same $200: what a Claude plan buys at API prices

In plain words: someone ran each plan flat out for a month and priced every token at API rates. A $200 plan held up to about $8,000 of usage. Hardly anyone uses a plan that hard, so treat it as a ceiling.

Anthropic sells Claude two ways: a monthly plan with a usage meter, and an API billed per token. SemiAnalysis ran the plans to their limits and priced every token at API rates. The gap is large, and so are the caveats.

  • $8,000most API usage the $200 tier could hold (June test)
  • 40×that tier’s value against its price
  • ~5×Claude $200 vs OpenAI $200 on mid-tier models (October test)

What each plan can hold, at API prices

This is SemiAnalysis’s June table, shared on Reddit by a developer who spends about $1,000 a month on API credits. Each bar is the approximate most a plan could consume in a month, priced as if every token were bought through the API.

Then October changed the picture

SemiAnalysis retested every plan on 5 October. Two findings are in the free part of the report: on mid-tier models (Opus 5.5 against GPT 6.1 Sol) Anthropic’s $200 plan offers about 5× the API-equivalent value of OpenAI’s, and OpenAI has since halved the value of its $200 plan and added a $500 tier.

Why a ceiling is not a promise

Few people run flat out

The numbers assume every limit is used every week. The Reddit poster says the same: the maximum assumes nonstop use.

The model matters

SemiAnalysis: “it doesn’t make sense to say a plan is worth $X in isolation.” Value depends on the plan, the model and the workload together.

Limits move

Labs change limits with promos and releases, and can do it silently. SemiAnalysis found one provider running a small A/B test that gave one account about 20% lower limits.

Different products

A plan is used through Anthropic’s own apps and Claude Code. An API key is billed per token and works in any tool that accepts one.

So is the API the wrong choice?

Not automatically. The Reddit post asks whether about $1,000 a month of API credits should have been a Max plan. Compare your real monthly API bill with the plan price. If you spend more than $200 and your work fits a plan’s limits, a plan is cheaper. If you run parallel agents, need keys for other tools, or hit the weekly limit, the API keeps working.

Chapter 2 of 4 · 4 min

A Claude plan is a meter, not a price tag

In plain words: a plan is a meter with two dials, one that refills every 5 hours and one that refills weekly. You are not buying tokens. You are buying a share of the meter.

A plan does not sell you tokens. It sells you a share of a usage meter that refills on a schedule. How far that meter goes depends on the model you pick and the kind of work you do.

Two meters run at once

Claude plans show a short window that resets every five hours and a weekly cap that resets every seven days. A month is limited by the weekly cap, because the five-hour window refills many times inside a week.

Each token type spends the meter differently

SemiAnalysis measured how far the meter moves for each kind of token. The ratios between token types on a plan do not match the ratios on the API price list, which is why the same plan is worth different amounts for different work.

  • InputFresh text sent to the model
  • Cache writeText saved for reuse
  • Cache readSaved text read again, very cheap
  • OutputWhat the model writes, the priciest

The newest model has its own allowance

On Max and Ultra, Fable is included up to half of your weekly limit. The rest of the plan is for Opus, Sonnet and Haiku. On Pro, Fable is paid with usage credits instead. SemiAnalysis priced a full Fable 5.1 allowance on the $200 plan at about $2,485 of API usage.

What each plan includes today

PlanPriceUsageAPI credits
Pro$20 monthly, $17 on annual1× every 5 hours and every weekNone
Max$100 monthly5× Pro, every 5 hours and every week$100 a month
Ultra$200 monthly10× Pro weekly, no 5-hour limit for verified accounts$200 a month

Anthropic’s page lists these as “subject to change”. The June SemiAnalysis report used the older names Max 5x and Max 20x.

Limits are not fixed

When Opus 5.5 cut its API price, Anthropic raised the Opus allowance by about 20% on Max plans and about 50% on Pro. SemiAnalysis found that was not enough to fully offset the price cut, so API-equivalent value still fell. Plans can improve or shrink without a new plan name, so measure before you commit.

Chapter 3 of 4 · 5 min

How Claude API pricing works

In plain words: the API has a price list per million tokens, and output costs more than input. Reusing text you already sent (caching) cuts the bill.

API pricing is a per-million-token rate card. Once you know the four token types and two discounts, you can price any job by hand.

The price list

Prices are in US dollars per million tokens (MTok). Output costs five times input on every model below.

ModelInputCache write (5 min)Cache readOutput
Haiku 5.5$0.10$0.125$0.01$0.50
Sonnet 5.5$2$2.50$0.10$10
Opus 5.5$4$5$0.20$20
Fable 5.1$10$12.50$0.25$50

Haiku 5.5 costs more for prompts over 100,000 tokens ($0.50 input, $2.50 output). Other current models include the full 1M-token context at the standard rate.

Output price per million tokens
  • Haiku 5.5
    $0.50
    input $0.10
  • Sonnet 5.5
    $10.00
    input $2.00
  • Opus 5.5
    $20.00
    input $4.00
  • Fable 5.1
    $50.00
    input $10.00

Two ways to pay less

Prompt caching

Saving a prompt costs 1.25× the input price for five minutes. Reading it back costs 0.1× (0.05× on Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, 0.025× on Fable 5.1). It pays off after one read.

Batch processing

Work that can wait goes through the Batch API at 50% off input and output. Fast mode is the opposite: Opus 5.5 at $8 input and $40 output for quicker replies.

A worked example

One coding session on Opus 5.5: 50,000 input tokens and 15,000 output tokens. Do the sums yourself.

Without caching

Total: $0.50

40,000 of the input read from cache

Total: $0.348

Caching cut the session by about 30%, and output is now 86% of the bill. Output tokens are where most of the money goes.

Plan or API? Find your break-even

In plain words: divide a plan’s price by 30. If you would spend more than that per day through the API, the plan is probably cheaper.

A plan is a flat monthly fee. The API is pay as you go. Divide the plan price by 30 and you get the daily API spend above which the plan wins.

Your three break-even numbers

  • Pro$0.67a day of API-equivalent use$20 ÷ 30

About 1.3 Opus 5.5 sessions of the size in the last guide ($0.50 each, no caching).

  • Max$3.33a day of API-equivalent use$100 ÷ 30

About 6.7 Opus 5.5 sessions of the size in the last guide ($0.50 each, no caching).

  • Ultra$6.67a day of API-equivalent use$200 ÷ 30

About 13.3 Opus 5.5 sessions of the size in the last guide ($0.50 each, no caching).

Below the line, the API is cheaper. Above it, the plan is cheaper, until you hit a limit and the plan stops adding value.

Which one fits you

Choose a plan if…

  • You use Claude or Claude Code for hours on most days.
  • You can live with an occasional pause when a limit is reached.
  • You want a predictable monthly bill.

Choose the API if…

  • Your usage is light or irregular, under the daily line.
  • You run parallel agents or long jobs that cannot be throttled.
  • You need keys for other tools or cannot subscribe.

Use both if…

  • You want a plan for daily work and metered overflow.
  • Max and Ultra already include $100 and $200 a month of API credits.

Try it with the Reddit example

About $1,000 a month is roughly $33 a day. That is five times the $6.67 line for the $200 plan. If the work is coding inside Anthropic’s tools and fits the plan’s limits, the plan would be far cheaper. If it needs parallel runs, other tools or heavy Fable use, the answer can flip. Check your own bill, not an average.
